![]() | BRIAN ‘BRENDAN’ MADDEN 7/12/1950 – 8/2/2011 ![]() Much loved and extremely-well respected sporting administrator Brian ‘Brendan’ Madden passed away peacefully at the Wesley Hospital, Brisbane on Tuesday 8th February 2011. A dedicated family man and well endeared public servant, Brendan was well known and loved in many circles within the Ipswich region. A hardworking man, his career saw him undertake many roles within the Queensland Government including positions with Queensland Health and most recently Disability Services Queensland which saw him to retirement in 2008. Brendan would be most familiar to many in the numerous roles he undertook within his beloved Ipswich City Bulls Football Club based at Sutton Park, Brassall. During his 28 years with the club Brendan held many positions including that of President and also Chairman of Directors. Brendan’s commitment to the Bulls ultimately earnt him Life Membership and he also received a number of Club Person of the Year awards which is the highest individual honor within our sporting organisation. His tenure with the club also earnt him the unwavering respect of every player, supporter and administrator in the game. Brendan was seen as somewhat of a father figure around the club and his compassion and unselfishness was always on show to all who played for, supported or played against the Bulls. His familiar smiling face will be sorely missed by all who know him and his generosity was truly one of a kind. Whilst an enjoyable pastime of Brendan’s was his football, his number one passion was his family, and his love for them was unsurpassed. Brendan is survived by his dearly loved wife Glenys, their children Jon, David, Katie, Rebekah and their partners. He was also a much loved poppy to his grandchildren and will be sorely missed by his mother Gaie and his siblings Peter, Dennis, Ann-Marie and Jim and families. Brendan was also much loved by his ‘other’ boys at the Ipswich City Bulls Football Club. Whether you were a supporter, a player or an official it was always a pleasure to be in his company. Regardless of ability, he would always make you feel like a champion with his compassion and encouraging words. The boys were always primed and ready for battle when Brendan was around because they knew it wouldn’t be too long before the red frogs were doing the rounds of the warm up to add just that little bit of extra hype prior to kick-off. His military precision with pre game preparation of massages, team sheets, strapping, hydration and words of inspiration were all a part of being a Bull which the dressing shed will miss terribly. Brendan had time for all involved with the club, regardless of ability or stature, but those close to him knew that if you had something important to say, that the left side was the place you had to be in order for his attention. His right side was the ‘deaf’ side and was a trap to the new players at the club which they’d quickly learn. Many new players were first greeted by Brendan Madden with a smile and his impression was always lasting which is reflected by the number attending here today. He will always be an irreplaceable member of the Bulls family. His tireless efforts have laid a foundation at the club which will be encouraged to live on forever. His legacy has touched many and has shaped lives, careers and friendships. Ipswich City Football Club today remembers Brendan for the person he is, and not for what he was. Everyone associated with the football club passes on their deepest sympathies to his wonderful loving family. "Your boys will always miss you” Message from Wayne Blackmore I am so sorry to hear about the loss of a very good friend of mine and the most loved administrator of the greatest football club in QLD. February 1992 I had the greatest pleasure to be introduced to the most beautiful person I have ever met in my life, through Ipswich City Football Club, commonly known as the bulls. I signed my 5 year old son Daniel up to play football for the bulls on a Saturday afternoon, My wife at the time Cindy received a phone call from Brendan on Monday afternoon, asking if we could help the club out assisting with an under seven side, and like all good mums, Cindy said yeah no problem when would you like him (My Husband) to be there. Brendan said as your son Daniel has to be here tomorrow arvo could your husband (you said Wayne) could come down and help the coach that would be great, no problem she said. So under instructions I arrived on the Tuesday arvo and asked at the tiny little toilet block, where could I find Brendan Madden, and like me most people there, they where new to the club and didn’t have a clue who Brendan was. It took me about another 30 seconds to work out who Brendan Madden was, this tall dark haired man with the greatest smile I have ever seen was addressing the players and parents, some 150 of them back then. I went up and said g’day mate my names Wayne Blackmore you rang my wife yesterday and asked if I could help the under sevens coach, where is he.??...Brendan said ....sorry mate can you stand on my left side I can't hear you......so I moved to the Left, and repeated...g’day mate my names Wayne Blackmore you rang my wife yesterday and asked if I could help the under sevens coach, where is he, Brendan replied "your it" and those 20 kids over there, if you could put them into 2 groups of 10 until we get a second coach, that would be great. Over the next 15 years we spent, I think ....more time together at the club (trying to help it grow, with the help of the Devaintier's, Paterson's and the also the beautiful Thompson's) than we did with our own families, as a lot of you people know what Brendan did for Ipswich City Football Club. Being a Committee member, President, Board member and his most treasured position with the club, Team Manager of the senior sides. He was such a beautiful man. I am only one of many of hundreds of people throughout Ipswich and Brisbane football futurity who will miss Brendan. Wayne Blackmore Life Member, Ipswich City Football Club | ||||
